If Tha Blooz Don’t Kill Me
I’m excited about a batch of songs coming soon .. here’s a little sample ..
If Tha Blooz Don’t Kill Me
If tha blooz don’t kill me, I know that whiskey will,
Said if tha blooz don’t kill me, I know that whiskey will,
And if that whiskey don’t do me, that red-haired woman will
I got a red-haired woman treats me awful mean,
I got a red-haired woman treats me awful mean,
But that red-haired woman’s the prettiest gal I ever’d seen
I got all kinds of money, sometimes don’t know what to do,
I got all kinds of money, yeah, sometimes I just don’t know what to do,
I got all kinds of money, and I got all kinds of problems too
Well if tha blooz don’t kill me, I know that whiskey will,
Said if tha blooz don’t kill me, I know that whiskey will,
And if that whiskey don’t do me, that red-haired woman will
Well I went out last Wednesday, ramblin’ round the town
Said I went out last Wednesday, ramblin’ around tha town,
I’m still just gettin’ started as the Tuesday sun go down
I went North and South, looked to the East and the West,
I went North then South, traveled to the East and to the West,
I’m lookin’ for that red-haired woman, the gal I love the best
Well my wife done left me, children don’t say my name,
I said my poor wife done left, lost children don’t say my name,
That old hound dog still barkin’, I guess he must feel the same
They used to say, “Joe Eddie, why you goin’ downtown?”
They’d say, “Now Daddy, why you gotta go downtown?”
The only answer I can give ’em, “I’m lookin’ through the lost and found”
Well if tha blooz don’t kill me, I know that whiskey will,
Said if tha blooz don’t kill me, I know that whiskey will,
And if that White Lightnin’ don’t do me, you know that red-haired woman will
Wall Street Blues
I wrote this song back in college, when I was studying to become a Finance major. Needless to say, that didn’t work out!
I was drinkin’ in the bar
Stock broker showed me his brand new car
His new gold watch, and his girl friend too
He said, “Hey there buddy, I can get all of this for you.
Invest a little money in me;
I’m gonna make you a rich man, yeah boy, you’ll see.”
Well I bought ’em low, and watched ’em rise
Stock split, then doubled in size
Monday came, and went in a flash
But on Tuesday morning, the whole market crashed, uh huh
And I went into a trance
I should’ve listened to my baby, and sold ’em when I had the chance
The market crashed
The market crashed
The market crashed, and I lost all my cash
It’s all over the news
I was looking for some new shoes, but all I found was them
Wall Street Blues
– interlude –
Now I’m walkin’ in the streets
I got no money and nothin’ to eat
I’ll tell you once, you can take it from me
Ain’t nobody on Wall Street gettin’ rich for free, no
You better be ready to lose
Don’t end up like me, singin’ them Wall Street Blues
The market crashed
The market crashed
The market crashed, and I lost all my cash
It’s all over the news
I was looking for a new ‘do, but all I found was them
Wall Street Blues
Level At The Cross
I was listening to a radio special about Sun Records, and at the end they asked Sam Phillips if, after all this time and all the great music and artists he’s worked with, if there was any wisdom he had gained that he might share. And he said, “One thing someone told me long ago, was that the ground is always level at the cross.” I’ve been looking for a transcript of that interview, or to listen again to that radio special, to hear again exactly what he said, but so far I haven’t been able to find it.
Walking down this road of life
Stumbling on the struggle and strife
Try to keep the heart and soul from getting lost
Wilderness all around
Disillusions lost and found
But the ground is always level at the cross
The ground is always level at the cross
The ground is always level at the cross
Troubles laid, and worries tossed
The ground is always level at the cross
Since I was young they tried to teach it to me
As I grow on they try to preach it to me
You make your own way, you’ll go astray at your own cost
Yeah you can know it all till you’re proud stiff
But before you know it you’ll be runnin’ off the cliff
And the ground is sure to be level at the cross
The ground is always level at the cross
The ground is always level at the cross
Troubles laid, and worries tossed
The ground is always level at the cross
Well I was high, my danger mighty
I thought all the world was right behind me
As I’s a’ capturin’ an’ killin’ ev’ry livin’ thin’ that I don’ crossed
Until suddenly I was seized with doubt
I realized my demise was all unfigured out
And that the ground is always level at the cross
When the brimstone is your only friend
She’s stickin’ with you until the bitter dying ends
And she’ll stab you in the back, straight up in your face
Bizarre, how you’ll wished you would’ve done
Carried that cross they so simply sung
You fell down but the ground was always level in its place
The ground is always level at the cross
The ground is always level at the cross
Troubles laid, and worries tossed
The ground is always level at the cross
Satan is the easy kind
He’s always ready to be wined and dined
open up your heart he’ll put you
At the mouth of his river of sauce
He’ll turn your mom and poppa’s five and dime
Into a swingin’ six six six sixty-nine
But the ground is only level at the cross
The ground is always level at the cross
The ground is always level at the cross
Troubles laid, and worries tossed
The ground is always level at the cross
You wouldn’t be off if you said I believed
I’d take the whole world with me when I leave
She turns around me, bring your frankincense and muir
Baby I’m your boss
But now I’m buried six feet under
My bones left cold to lie and wonder
At the ground that’s always level at my cross
The ground is always level at the cross
The ground is always level at the cross
Troubles laid, and worries tossed
The ground is always level at the cross
The ground is always level at the cross
The ground is always level at the cross
I Can’t Keep A Secret
As the great Neil Young once sang, “Why do I keep f!@#*&$ up?”, I’ve sometimes had to pause and question myself in the mirror.
Standing all alone in my bedroom
Silence fills my ears to overflowing
The very thing I was thinkin’
Seein’ you walk in here drinkin’
I guess it’s a case of a dream come true
And I can’t keep a secret from you
I can’t keep a secret from you
You always see right through to the truth
The truth shall be revealed, hearts become unsealed
Loose lips sink ships, and broken hearts still love
And I can’t keep a secret from you
– Interlude –
You know, my darling, you’re my best friend
I’m always right there beside you ’til the end
And even after that, it’s gonna be written as fact
I guess it’s a case of a dream come true
And I can’t keep a secret from you
I can’t keep a secret
No I can’t keep a secret
I can’t keep a secret
From you
