Robert Hunter is one of my favorite songwriting poets; he wrote many songs for the Grateful Dead. I found this one in a book of his collected lyrics, then sought out his music for it, which I found on his album, Tales Of The Great Rum Runners.

Bob Dylan covers can be tricky, even the songs that seem so simple are somehow packed with a lot of emotional punch. I never come close. My favorite Bob Dylan songs are the early acoustic ones, off his first couple records. This one takes me back down memory lane.

The Valentinos version entered the Billboard Hot 100 on June 27, 1964, where it stayed on the chart for two weeks, peaking at number 94. The Rolling Stones had their first number-one hit with this song in July 1964.
